attempting to pigeonhole 79.5 into something as narrow as a single genre would be an ill advised, if not impossible task. the new york city band sounds like someone spinning a radio dial with such passionate intensity that all the stations blend together into a single, transcendent, almost spiritual force. its disco to the beat of modern house, its a supremes cover of a cardi b banger, its roland kirk playing jazz through one saxophone, funk through another, and the most earwormy pop tune the 1970s could muster through a third. its an experience one so effecting that with only a self-released 12inch single in circulation, 79.5 had been written up twice in the new yorker on the merit of their live sets alone. their debut album predictions is produced by leon michels and was recorded at the diamond mine in queens the old school way, with the whole band playing the songs in one take and captured to analog tape.

2018 reissue of an unknown masterpiece regrouping old recordings from the chelmsford (uk) based chen yi commune. the sound of chen yi is rough & brutal. electronic music, soundcollages that reminds to throbbing gristle or (early)spk aswell as electro-pop-tracks & songs like early cabaret voltaire, chris & cosey, severed heads.

on an unassuming cassette, just labelled ‘robert rental’ in green dymo tape, these demos have lain unheard for years amongst his family’s treasured possessions, cared-for artefacts of a life cut short far too soon.
these songs, which robert recorded in his council flat in battersea in 1980, provide an enticing glimpse into his all-too-infrequent solo work. on most occasions, robert worked with thomas leer, daniel miller or other collaborators. these are rough recordings, tape hiss still in evidence, but his creativity shines through the murk, like uncut diamonds.

londons silverlining turns in another two underground bombs on this sought-after label, this time with two tracks never released before on vinyl. a paradoxical insistance is fresh from 2018, with his trademark skip and depth, while turn, turn, turn employs the spokenword talents of canada s effluence with trippy bleeps and cavernous stabs. like all releases on the label, the tracks have been mastered to tape, and cut onto deliciously chunky 180g vinyl.

mrr: michael raymond russell / a connoisseur/collector of vintage drums/analog equipment and engineer/producer inspired by 1960’s/70’s underground music. mrr has been producing heavy drum break production inspired by psychedelic rock to heavy funk to electronic library records for more than 20 years. started from a sampler collecting vinyl to now creating a library record label drumetrics with production recorded on vintage equipment from vacuum tube equalizers/valve compressors/tape machines/tape echoes etc. paying back homage to sampled music for producers to utilize.

jaffa surfa also known as zoltan pal is hailing from hungary and has released a few records already on other labels like tape hiss for example that already caught our attention a bit earlier. therefor we were quite happy to receive a demo from him and we signed almost all the tracks that he sent us. three tracks aiming straight at the dance floor and we hope that you enjoy and play them as much as we do.

after offering-up paratrooper as part of dj tennis recent dj kicks, the israeli duo red axes arrive on life and death for an original ep. sami is a post-moondog shamanic tribal trip, while round combines dilapidated post-goa electronics with just the right amount of cowbells and guitars psych. vego is a lo-if western spaghetti full of tape delays and amplifiers sauce while pulse waves and wind blows on a big russian bell at the title track kalacol. a record that could only come from niv and dori another reconfiguration of the life and death mausoleum.

when looking for music to be released on magazine, our guideline has always been energy. the key question remains the same: does the artist have something important to say? does it have a sense of urgency? alex played us these tracks while visiting the magazine studio in cologne earlier this year and we were consumed by unadulterated rage. this is anything but a conceptual release, alex has not released this kind of music before. a side of alex manifests itself through these techno tracks, that most might not have known before. brutal yet beautiful, furious yet fragile. a berlin native who shaped his sense for techno by striving through his hometown and its infamous raves, alex is now one of the prominent protagonists of that scene – not only when regularly playing at berghain. the ep harnesses this experience perfectly, fully preserving the energy of the creation process by recording directly to tape. most productions may have suffered from this primitive method of locking sound into position, but not these tracks from a techno master.

davey woodward has been a prolific songwriter with his bands the brilliant corners and the experimental pop band. an indie pop legend to some, obscure outsider to most. he approaches his fourth decade making alternative music with the same enthusiasm and single mindedness as he did in the first. having recently finished recording with karen, davey had an idea that he wanted to record an album of songs quickly with people he had never worked with before. davey knew the songs had to sound effortless, in many ways go back to a time when artists like bowie would go into the studio without finished songs or someone like dylan would work the song out while the tape was rolling. he did not want the songs to sound laboured. the winter orphans were born.

vast, expansive and introspective works utilising place-specific found sound on this second cremation lily lp for alter. contemplating mortality, illness and the perennial bleakness of british winter in a seaside town we find zen zsigo experimenting with piano, violin, synthesiser and walkman tape players. layering field recordings of the hastings shoreline atop druggy, stretched out 303 basslines and snippets of spoken word there seems to be an overarching thematic of memory and reflection at play. from vignettes of crumbling glass and bittersweet drones through to sprawling, semi-rhythmical pieces (‘as a sea creature...’) it seems as if zsigo is trawling the coast for fragments of its former glory. the end result of his study manages to echo the work of yoran, leyland kirby and even jacob kirkegaard yet the rare moments where he lays bare his own vocal narrative seemingly transforms in england now, underwater into sonic diary territory. mixing salt-water soaked cassette loops with haunting, minimalist piano motifs and warped recordings of crashing waves and bird noise an intense atmosphere of ballards drowned world is evoked through sound.

another very special ep on al zanders a to z label teaming up this time with vocalist sheyi, for a one-off foray into broken beat territory. the story of its inspiration begins with a trip to notting hill record & tape exchange... after asking for some broken beat, the assistant ventured a withering opinion that -won t be monotonous enough, try the house music section instead- turns out it was phil asher of co-op fame - who, after establishing a genuine desire for said genre - sold al a bunch of west london music which became the influence for this ep. allowing sheyi to shine over a bare bones, syncopated rhythm track on the title cut and an equally stripped down satisfy al amps up the groove, with the g.i.t dub, which was made for ig culture s radio show. limited run on these - don t snooze !

some time around 20 years ago, the artist known as dub surgeon made an absorbing album of beautiful dub infused with ambiance, found sounds and horizontal rhythms. the lost future was recorded at the former amsterdam film academy where dub surgeon. the recording engineer for the project was ricardo villalobos. dub surgeon and ricardo villalobos then mastered it together, putting it through several vintage mixers and recording it to 2 inch tape. then, tragedy struck: a storm surged and ignited a fire that ravaged the studio. the master copy was thought to have been lost forever. dub surgeon stopped making music and disappeared into the shadows after just two eps on future dub in 2002/3. but one day 15 years later, totally out of the blue, he received a demo of the lost future. pay attention to this, it said. attached was a demo version of the long lost album and now, finally, it has a perfect and impossibly poetic home on dubais ark to ashes, which is named in homage to the story of lee scratch perry burning down his black ark studio to rid it of demons. sounding as fresh as ever, the lost future is an authentic dub experience with a story as special as the music itself.

this lp includes misterios cosmogaficos remastered album, originally released in 1983, plus 5 tracks taken from espiritus unreleased cassette originally recorded in 1984: chile was a place where very little space was given for artistic creation, sometimes it was forbidden to create. however, with a determined inner strength, mr. valdés decided to take this project forward self-producing his own tape cassettes (diy culture). he wanted to show the young people, his friends and family that the chilean could create music at the best level in the world.

from playing acid house at the legendary haçienda to residencies at a number of the world’s super clubs and a grammy nomination, sasha s career trajectory is pretty much unparalleled. his contribution to electronic music in the 90s is synonymous with the rise of progressive house. as a producer, his vast discography includes a number of studio albums, remixes for madonna and the chemical brothers and soundtracks for computer games, whilst a long list of acclaimed mixes are heralded by many as some of the greatest of all time. as well as his work as a highly visible public figure, he has an extensive history of mentoring other artists behind the scenes, running his own management agency and a studio in new york whilst introducing a wealth of acclaimed artists via his last night on earth imprint. here, across 4 plates of vinyl, all but 4 of the 20 tracks on sasha s fabric 99 mix are available in their full-length glory. featuring his own exclusive track smoke monk (fabric mix), his moog-apella edit of george fitzgerald s echo forgets, and his fabric1999 remix of baile - amae feat. felicia douglass.

cordial recordings in partnership with miami legend willie clarke are proud to release this unreleased version of ‘stand up for what you want’ by kat roberts. the song had previously been released on 12&#8243,,, with kat doubling up with les brown, who provided a motivational speech throughout the song. the version we’re releasing on the a side is the luscious solo vocal version by kat which had sat on tape since it’s recording in 84. on the flip we’ve used a small extract of les original vocal before kat lets rip.

long awaited reissue on white vinyl of croatian amor’s debut album from 2013. the world marked a switch in the project from the earliest tape experiments and this debut is in many ways a key release in the back catalogue of posh isolation.

pontiac streator previously appeared as a guest on the first west mineral ltd release, pendant’s by-now classic make me know you sweet, while ulla straus is perhaps best known for her part on the cultishly adored bblisss compilation tape which introduced huerco s.’s pendant alias to the world at large. their first album together is a bedroom-crafted confection where drowsy meditations smudge with lounging exotica themes in a blunted style to properly heavy-lidded effect. limited edition of 300 copies on black vinyl.

“ample profanity” is composer laurie tompkins and cellist oliver coates collaborative debut: coagulated gristle surfacing from a beal, brooklyn-brown, ray v, bangs, gan, rugs and works acid bath. the ep collects 5 pieces composed by laurie and then co-edited and performed with olly. the former plays keys, tape player, and samples, the latter cello with effects. both sing. here is grazed, contorted classicism, here post-binge hallucinations, here gunky funk. the vinyl release includesd a download code.

spoki (ghosts) is the sound of an artist putting their private world to tape. of exploring and pushing the limits of themselves and technology to realise the music in their head. recorded in riga between 1988-2011. as ingus bauskenieks himself explains: my own world differs a little from my friends tastes. and as my father said the collective art is not art at all. the music of ingus bauskenieks is both deeply private and completely alien. experimental yet happy to celebrate pop influences such as engelbert humperdinck, simon & garfunkel or fleetwood mac. it is shaped by the artists engagement with technology and his strive to put to record his own world. as ingus explains, it is the sound of him: doing what i like to do.

“motor city” remixes by yen towers, abdulla rashim, quiltland and 1991. from blissed-out, droney tape works to sharp dance floor tracks, each of the four remixes presents a beautiful elaboration and articulation of sand circles “motor city”.

the pale and the colourful is the first album of internazionale presented on vinyl by posh isolation after a near flood of limited tape releases both through his own remarkable janushoved label and through posh isolation. the pale and the colourful is a logical summary of internazionales work up to this point and is the prime example of the sensual synthetic meditations he has come to be known for.
the clear pop sensibility to his compositions are clouded with noises and ambiguous field recordings and it is somehow hard to really figure out if the music intends to lift us up or hold us down. what is certain is that no internazionale release up to this point reaches the level of this new album.

after “star alliance”’s initial release as a limited six tape-box set, it was apparent that there was a need for a reissue, which now comes in the form of this remastered double lp set with a selection of the best work and even a few new tracks added. the story is the same but the narrative has been sharpened.

ghori from d-operation drop is a driving soundsystem roller with a low swung beat crushed through 80’s sci-fi algorithms and burnt onto analog tape. on the flip is natty coil, one of the crew’s most requested tracks, a masterful mix of organic bass and robotic shuffled hi hats from these mix scientists. d-operation drop are a crew from italy who gravitated around their love of bass, releasing music on labels such as artikal, lion charge, zam zam and moonshine, gaining support from the likes of j:kenzo, n type, bukez finezt, and dj madd.

a1: the exceptional producer stenny has been a munich resident for a few years to be as close as possible to his musical home port of ilian tape. here he once again proves what a perfectly mixed supergroovy breakbeat board is.
a2: janis and fabian from the live duo aka trap10 do not hide their musical ideals. in “people zoo” it’s classic but classy, &#8203,,&#8203,,according to old detroit style and chicago tradition.
b1: jonas friedlich’s eps on molten moods and four triangles are a good example of what techno’s style is all about: tape delay is his weapon of choice, often with vocals and rarely straight beats. with “jazzersizzzze” he ties in masterfully to it.
b2: p-t2 has become an integral part of the red sun (club rote sonne) in just a few years, indulging her fondness for the harder pace of club music. accordingly, their rfr post is an acid board, as it is written in the book.

songs about the unity of sudan, peace between muslims and christians and the fate of war orphans, backed by grooves equally taking influence from arabic sounds, american funk as well as neighboring ethiopia. kamal keila was among the first artist we met in sudan during our two trips to khartoum and omdurman last year. he is one of the key figures of the sudanese jazz scene that was a vital part of the musical culture in sudan from the mid 1960s until the islamist revolution in the late 1980s. when we meet kamal he luckily presented us with two mold covered studio reels. each tape included five tracks. one with english lyrics and another with arabic ones. musically you can hear the influence of neighboring ethiopia much more than on other sudanese recordings of the time, as well as references to fela and american funk and soul. his lyrics, at least when he sings in english which gave him more freedom from censorship, are very political. a brave statement in the political climate of sudan of the last decades, preaching for the unity of sudan, peace between muslims and christians and singing the blues about the fate of war orphans called shmasha. a note inside one of the boxes specified the track titles, durations and the fact that the sessions were recorded on the 12th of august 1992. both sessions stand as a hearable testament how kamal keila stuck to a sound aesthetic from decades ago, while incorporating current events into his lyrics. kamal keilas album is the first in a series of releases covering the sudanese jazz scene on habibi funk. be on the lookout for albums by the scorpions and sharhabeel coming soon.
